# MD5 Hash Generator

Instant MD5 checksums for text & files — plus the honest truth about MD5 security — by Dinal Studios

⚠️ Read this first: MD5 is broken for security. Collisions can be created on purpose, so NEVER use MD5 for passwords, signatures or verifying untrusted downloads. It survives only as a quick, non-security checksum (spotting accidental file corruption, cache keys, legacy systems). For security use SHA-256 — there is a free generator linked below.

🧮 MD5 Hash of Text INSTANT

Type or paste any text. The MD5 hash updates as you type, computed locally by a pure-JavaScript MD5 implementation — the text never leaves this page.

Your MD5 hash will appear here…
MD5 · 32 hex characters · 128 bits

📁 MD5 Checksum of a File

Select a file to compute its MD5 checksum locally. Handy for matching legacy checksums published by older projects, or for quick corruption spot-checks of your own files.

✅ MD5 Checker — Do They Match?

Compare two MD5 hashes character by character. Identical hashes mean identical data (for accidental-corruption checks). One different character means different data.

🎓 MD5 Explained — A Brilliant Tool That Time Broke

What MD5 is. Designed in 1992 by Ron Rivest, MD5 turns any input into a 128-bit fingerprint written as 32 hex characters. It was fast, simple, and became the internet's default checksum for downloads, file verification and (mistakenly) password storage.
What "broken" means. A secure hash must make it practically impossible to find two different inputs with the same hash (a "collision"). Researchers demonstrated MD5 collisions in 2004, and by 2008 attackers forged a real web certificate with one. Collisions are now cheap to produce on a home computer.
Why passwords + MD5 = disaster. MD5 is FAST — billions of guesses per second on a GPU. A leaked database of MD5 password hashes falls to brute force almost immediately. Password storage needs slow, salted algorithms: bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.
Where MD5 is still fine. Non-adversarial jobs: detecting accidental corruption (a flipped bit during transfer), deduplication, cache keys, checksums inside rsync/Git-style tooling for non-security purposes, and matching legacy fingerprints where nobody is trying to deceive you.
